A police officer died while two others were injured on Thursday after an improvised explosive device (IED) concealed within a donkey cart detonated at the Mandera border crossing point of Ina Bari in Mandera County.

The 9:50 AM explosion occurred immediately after the cart came to a stop at the border police checkpoint.

Police said the deceased died on the spot while the two were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Authorities are swiftly responding to the incident, conducting investigations to ascertain the details surrounding the attack,” read a police report.

It added that security measures were being heightened to ensure the safety of the area and its residents in the wake of the incident.
