Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has termed the apology made to Mama Nginga Kenyatta by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as just a political move and lacks genuine intent.
According to the legislator, Gachagua was only attempting to iron out the existing political tiff between the government and the Kenyattas to gain support in the Mount Kenya region.
"I think it's a result of the things that are happening in Mt. Kenya region. There is some disquiet that is building, there are those that are contending to replace him from his seat and that is public knowledge," Amollo told KTN on Tuesday.
"He needs all the friends that he can gather and that includes Uhuru Kenyatta, the much the better for him."
In his view, Gachagua's popularity has been slowly eroding as the government keeps introducing unsavory reforms including heavy taxation.
He opines that the reforms are now biting the government back and they are seeking every avenue to secure support from the region which has been a voter stronghold for eons.
"There is disquiet over the actions that have been taken first in terms of over-taxation because they have realised it is extremely harmful to many business people and ordinary citizens in Mt. Kenya," he added.
"They are trying to entreat themselves to the ordinary citizens by appearing to go back on a number of things that they have stood by."
On Monday, Gachagua walked back on the long-running attacks he made against Kenya's former first lady and former President Uhuru Kenyatta during and after the 2022 General Election.
“I am sorry for involving Mama Ngina Kenyatta in the last general elections politics. She is our mother. I therefore ask for forgiveness on behalf of our team for any inconvenience caused to her. I will never allow anyone to demean her or anyone from the region,” Gachagua told Kameme TV.
“The former President Uhuru Kenyatta is our son. We worked together for 17 years and only disagreed for 2 years and now that’s the past. I pray for him in his retirement. Uhuru is one of us. We shall talk with everyone.”
In April 2023, Gachagua took on MamOGa Ngina asking her to surrender half of the Kenyatta land estate to the Mau Mau and their children which he claimed was grabbed.
